Circus Horse, Sally Welchman. Acrylic on

Sally Welchman

In 2003, I began to exhibit with IO Gallery, Brighton. The gallery showcases the work of Brighton artists, designers and makers. It exhibits and sells local art and craft by jewelers, ceramicists, glass blowers printers, painters and sculptors.  In 2005 a new artist came into the gallery, Sally Welchman.  I was very inspired and struck by her work which is painted on resalvaged wood.  This is one of her first pieces from IO Gallery.  It was gifted to me as a 40th birthday present from my daughter. I love it. Turquoise is my favourite colour and I have a love of horses. It's quirky and childlike. All of Sally's work fit the genre 'Naive'.

My first visit to Brighton Art Fair was in 2009. it was overwhelming, very crowded and with so much art to peruse. I noticed an artist who was Scottish and seemed like a very genuine artist - and very humble with it - I could not afford any of his larger works on canvas, and I actually preferred his works on paper in the browser. This particular piece (mixed media on watercolour paper) reminds me of a sand clock. The simplicity and the colours resonated with me. It was Rob's first sale of that day. When I purchase other artist work, I understand the thrill that it gives.

Nude, Jake Spicer. Ink on paper 2013.jpg

In 2012, I started to attend a new life drawing group, called 'DRAW', based in New England Road, Brighton.  The founder member of the group is a talented artist - Jake Spicer. During a visit to the open studios in The Brighton Festival, I purchased two drawings from Jake.  This one is my favourite.  It is painted on paper with an ink brush pen  I adore the simplicity and freshness.

Wood carving by Carlos Santiago Ribeira.

Carlos Santiago Ribeira

In 2010 hosted an Open House exhibition with Brighton Open House exhibitions. It was the Christmas event.  I opened my home to the public for four weekends throughout December. I shared the space with Carlos Santiago Ribeira, a friend and woodcarver, and Ian Williams -  another friend and colleague who works in the medium of print and collage.  This carving was one of Carlos' first pieces -  made from a piece of found wood from Stanmer Park, Brighton.  This was gifted to me as an exchange for inviting him to exhibit in my space.  I love the way that the piece of wood was found with this great metallic bolt through it and how the artist worked the carving around this feature.
